Biography

Ms. Fatma Awale is the first County Executive Committee Member in charge of Water, Sanitation and Natural Resources. This is her second five-year term serving in the county government of Mombasa after the successful re-election of Hon. Hassan Ali Joho. She has a masters in international relations and an undergraduate degree in international business.

She has previously worked for United Nations Development Programme – Somalia (UNDP-Somalia) as well as having served in various government boards as a director, and as a Member of the National Anti-corruption Campaign Steering Committee and the Export Promotion Council (EPC) at the national level. Before her current appointment, she was Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Mombasa Water and Sanitation Company.

Ms. Awale was instrumental in the preparation and development of the Water Purchase Agreement between the National Government of Kenya and the County Government of Mombasa for Mwache Dam Project, to the tune of Kshs. 2.5 billion, and was successful in resource mobilization for the absorption capacity network for Mombasa County, amounting to another Kshs. 2.5 billion. She has done a lot of work in terms of donor funding for the County of Mombasa.

She has represented Mombasa County, and Kenya as a whole, as one of the key speakers in various international water forums providing insights from 15+ years experience in the water sector.

Ms. Awale is the first female Vice President of Athletics Kenya Federation (AK). She is also the first Kenyan to be elected onto the eight person Women’s Committee for the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF).
