As a young engineering graduate, Ek Sonn Chan began his work in the water sector in 1979 in Phnom Penh. In 1993 he was appointed to head the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority (PPWSA), where he gave his full commitment to rehabilitating this troubled public utility, bringing safe drinking water to a million people in Cambodia’s capital city. His work with the PPWSA has gained international recognition, and prizes include the ADB Water Prize 2004, the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Government Service on August 31st, 2006, the French honor medial Chevalier dans l’ordre de la Légion d’honneur on February 1st, 2010, and Stockholm Industry Water Award 2010.
He was nominated as Under Secretary of State of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy in June 2012 and as Secretary of State of the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft in September 2013.
