Biography

Gabriel Meruane is a Chilean Chemical Engineer and PhD in engineering science. With more than 26 years’ experience in applied research, development, and innovation activities, he also holds an Innovation and Entrepreneurship certificate from Stanford University. His current position at SQM is Senior R&D Project Manager for Lithium Production. Current efforts are focused on development of innovative engineering designs leading “SQM Salar Futuro Project” and technology update at SQM lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide production units worldwide.

SQM’s strategy for Salar de Atacama’s next stage is built around net zero water balance and net zero carbon footprint for lithium products in 2030. The use of water technologies is a key component for the strategy and SQM is working with a selected group of technology partners.
